SENATOR SMITH: Do you know whether they were all cared for? MR. LIGHTOLLER: I could not say, sir. SENATOR SMITH: All that would go? MR. LIGHTOLLER: In the case of the last boat I got out, I had the utmost difficulty in finding women. It was the very last boat of all, after all the other boats were put out and we came forward to put out the collapsible boats. In the meantime the forward emergency boat had been put out by one of the other officers. So we rounded up the tackles and got the collapsible boat to put that over. Then I called for women and could not get hold of any. Somebody said, "There are no women." With this, several men - SENATOR SMITH: Who said that? MR. LIGHTOLLER: I do not know, sir. SENATOR SMITH: On what deck was that? MR. LIGHTOLLER: On the boat deck. SENATOR SMITH: Were all the women supposed to be on the boat deck? MR. LIGHTOLLER: Yes, sir, they were supposed to be. . . . SENATOR SMITH: How about the sixth boat? MR. LIGHTOLLER: That is the collapsible, the surfboat? SENATOR SMITH: That is the collapsible. Did you take the same course with that? MR. LIGHTOLLER: That is a much smaller boat. . . SENATOR SMITH: How many people were put into this sixth boat? MR. LIGHTOLLER: Fifteen or perhaps 20. Between 15 and 20. SENATOR SMITH: And two seamen? MR. LIGHTOLLER: do not know what seamen SENATOR SMITH: Or one? MR. LIGHTOLLER: I think one seaman probably, if I had one seaman there. Perhaps it was two stewards. I do not know, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Would the two stewards answer the same purpose? MR. LIGHTOLLER: They would have to. SENATOR SMITH: Did you select the men to take that boat the same as you had before? MR. LIGHTOLLER: You mean whether I ordered them in? SENATOR SMITH: Yes. MR. LIGHTOLLER: I ordered them in. |
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Savez-vous si on s’est occupé d’elles? M. LIGHTOLLER : Je ne pourrais pas le dire, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Tout cela irait? M. LIGHTOLLER : Dans le cas du dernier canot que j’ai affalé, j’ai eu beaucoup de difficulté à trouver des femmes. C’était le tout dernier canot de tous, après que tous les autres canots aient été mis à l’eau et que nous soyons venus mettre à l’eau les canots démontables. Entre-temps, l’embarcation de secours avant avait été mise à l’eau par l’un des autres officiers. Nous avons donc arrondi les plaquages et obtenu le canot pliable pour l’utiliser. Ensuite, j’ai demandé si il y avait des femmes mais n’en ai pas trouvé. Quelqu’un a dit : «Il n’y a pas de femmes.» Donc, plusieurs hommes --- LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qui a dit cela? M. LIGHTOLLER : Je ne le sais pas, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Sur quel pont était-ce? M. LIGHTOLLER : Sur le pont des embarcations. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que toutes les femmes étaient censées être sur le pont des embarcations? M. LIGHTOLLER : Oui, monsieur, elles étaient censées l’être. . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’en est-il du sixième canot? M. LIGHTOLLER : C’est cela, le canot pliable? LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : C’est cela. Avez-vous suivi la même consigne? M. LIGHTOLLER : C’est un canot beaucoup plus petit. . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Combien de personnes ont été placées dans ce sixième canot? M. LIGHTOLLER : Quinze ou peut-être 20. Entre 15 et 20 ans. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et deux marins? M. LIGHTOLLER : Je ne sais pas quels sont ces marins. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ou un seul? M. LIGHTOLLER : Je pense un matelot, probablement, si j’avais un matelot ici. C’était peut-être deux stewards. Je ne sais pas, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que les deux stewards répondraient au même objectif? M. LIGHTOLLER : Ils devraient le faire. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous choisi les hommes pour prendre ce canot comme vous l’aviez fait auparavant? M. LIGHTOLLER : Vous voulez dire si je leur ai ordonné d’entrer? LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Oui. M. LIGHTOLLER : Je leur ai donné l’ordre. |
